‘Astronomical’ King Tides Hit CA; Minor Flooding Anticipated

CALIFORNIA — The highest tides of the year — commonly known as King Tides — were expected to crash onto California’s coastline through the weekend, raising the potential for minor flooding in some coastal communities, weather officials said.

A coastal floors advisory went into effect Saturday and was set to remain until 3 p.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

King Tides or astronomical tides, were expected to hit Saturday morning, followed by very low tides in the afternoon. The tidal peak was anticipated on Saturday.

Astronomical tides occur as the sun, moon and Earth fall into alignment. The moon, comes into pedigree, nearest to the earth, while the earth falls into perihelion, nearest to the sun, NWS officials said.

In Northern California, flood advisories were issued for low lying coastal areas of the San Francisco Bay shoreline through Sunday.

“Flooding of areas previously impacted by King Tide events is expected, including low lying lots, parks, and roads throughout the San Francisco Bay Shoreline with the highest high tides. Difficulty navigating shallow bay waters during the lowest low tides,” NWS officials said.

Meanwhile, in the Southland, a beach hazards advisory was issued for the coastal areas of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

“Tide poolers and beachgoers should be familiar with the times and heights of local tidal levels to avoid hazards that may arise from rapidly shifting water levels,” NWS officials wrote.

The impacts of such high tides may also be observed as a preview for what the state’s coastline could look like if sea level rise continues to impact water levels, weather officials said.

The California Coastal Commission was inviting volunteers to photograph the highest tides between Dec. 4 and Jan. 3, 2022. The commission also urged Californians living in coastal communities to take caution while taking photos or walking along the shore over the weekend.

“Take extra precautions when you walk on slippery areas or near big waves, and always be conscious of your surroundings and the weather conditions. Don’t turn your back on the ocean,” the Coastal Commission wrote. “Please be aware that shore birds may be taking refuge in areas above the tide line — don’t flush them out in the process of getting your shot.”

The California Coastal Commission also created a map for Californians to see when the King Tides were expected to hit local shores.
