This weekend we’ve got a treat of matches with everything from great stories. We have everything from a homecoming for a familiar face (Steven Gerrard) with Liverpool hosting Aston Villa to a big derby in Madrid (Real vs. Atletico) to scintillating calcio showdowns in Italy to a champion being crowned in the United States as the Portland Timbers host New York City in MLS Cup. There’s a little something for everyone, so let’s look at the top five matches to watch this weekend along with some honorable mentions below:
5. Liverpool vs. Aston Villa

Why watch: For the narrative, it doesn’t get much better than Stevie G and a resurgent Aston Villa side entering Anfield. He’ll have a tough assignment when it comes to stopping Mohamed Salah but Villa has had a resurgent defense since Gerrard has taken over. Liverpool could be without Diogo Jota but that won’t stop them considering how much depth is in the side.

4. Napoli vs. Empoli
Date: Sunday, Dec. 12 | Time: 7:30 a.m. ET

Why watch: While Napoli’s squad gets thinner by the week, they’ve generally been able to pull out a result. Following up their loss to Atalanta with a victory in Europa League over Leicester City, Luciano Spalletti will have his squad ready to go this weekend. Empoli have been one of the toughest sides to figure out this season as they’ve been competitive in most matches but have also found a way to lose matches that you’d expect them to win. They’ll hope that Andrea Pinamonti can keep his good form going to keep them in this one.
3. Sassuolo vs. Lazio
Date: Sunday, Dec. 12 | Time: 12 p.m. ET

Why watch: Lazio are doing everything that they can to turn the season into a roller coaster. Picking up red cards in their last two Serie A matches, allowing four goals to Napoli and Udinese, scoring a combined seven goals in their last two matches, there’s something for everyone! Sassuolo are in a similar situation scoring multiple goals in five straight matches but also allowing multiple goals in four of those last five games.
2. Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid
Date: Sunday, Dec. 12 | Time: 3:00 p.m. ET

Why watch: With Real Madrid already having a 10-point gap on Atletico heading into this derby match, there may not be as much at stake as usual in the table but these matches are generally must-watch affairs. Seeing how Real can cope without Karim Benzema will be important but it should be a tightly-contested affair.
1. Portland Timbers FC vs. New York City FC

Why watch: In what could be Diego Valeri’s final match for the Portland Timbers, they’ll be hosting MLS Cup for the first in franchise history as they take on New York City FC. While it is Portland’s third appearance in the final, this is NYCFC’s first appearance since being founded in May of 2013 as they welcome MLS Golden Boot winner Valentin Castellanos back from suspension. This is one where both teams will look to leave everything on the pitch.
