Letters to the Editor — Jan. 20, 2022

The Problem: Mayor Adams’ speak of a “notion of concern” on the subways after an increase in crime.

Lower than a month into his time period, Mayor Adams has been given the unlucky alternative to take a powerful and definitive stand on two of the town’s most urgent points (“The concern is rail,” Jan. 17).

With the horrific homicide of Michelle Alyssa Go, he has the prospect to reveal precisely how he'll tackle each violent crime and homelessness.

Will he be the “legislation and order” mayor that he has promised to be? Or is that simply the “notion” that he would really like us to have?

For the sake of the town and the reminiscence of Go, I hope it’s the previous and never the latter.

Adams, an informed man, initially failed to acknowledge the significance of notion and its penalties.

After the loss of life of a lady pushed in entrance of a practice, he stated the subways have been protected. He subsequently reversed that when individuals seen it as tone-deaf.

Though he simply started his time period in workplace, I'm skeptical about his judgment.

You'll be able to’t have it each methods, Mr. Mayor. You ran for workplace as a law-and-order candidate with a mandate to scale back violent crime in New York, which notably consists of its mass-transit system.

The NYPD has repeatedly reported that crime on this metropolis has soared over the previous two years, fueled by frustration with the pandemic, the enactment of so-called “bail reform” legal guidelines and the earlier mayor’s hostility towards law enforcement officials.

Speaking powerful on crime whereas telling New Yorkers that their fears are a figment of their imaginations is unacceptable.

Mark Stuart Ellison

Brooklyn

Listening to Adams and his feedback relating to “notion,” I'm struck by the parallels to Mayor Larry Vaughan within the film “Jaws.”

To maintain permitting lethal predators to leap turnstiles and prey on harmless riders isn't any totally different than permitting individuals to swim in harmful waters. Because the flick’s Chief Brody says: “We don’t must serve the individuals up as smorgasbord.”

Manhattan

The Publish’s no-nonsense “Genuinely afraid, Mr. Mayor” (Editorial, Jan. 17) ought to resonate with the a whole lot of 1000's of New Yorkers who use the subway frequently.

Adams must be admonished for callously speaking in regards to the “notion of crime” within the wake of Michelle Go’s horrific homicide by the hands of a deranged homeless man. The mayor is off to a very unhealthy begin.

I supported Adams’ candidacy primarily based on his strongly acknowledged positions of combating crime and fixing the continued homeless drawback.

To date, I hear quite a lot of speak from Adams however see little motion. The town’s epidemic of crime and homelessness must be the mayor’s focus, not burnishing his superstar picture.

Gerard Rosenthal

Manhattan

As a very long time resident and frequent subway rider, I don’t concern I will likely be bodily assaulted on the subway, other than by the scent. However I genuinely really feel a lot much less protected than I did two years in the past.

I’m far more aware of who’s round me and far more on my guard for sudden violence.

Is that this simply my notion? Possibly. However perceptions rely. Particularly if we wish people who find themselves much less used to the town and subway to return.

Concern retains companies distant, the eating places empty, Broadway and museums quiet and tax income low. Notion is actuality.

Gerhardie Williams

Manhattan

Mr. Mayor, is it only a notion that Michelle Go was violently killed? Is it a notion that now one other household has to mourn a member of the family?

There was a notion that, by some means, Adams can be totally different than the earlier mayor and restore some order to New York. Nicely, the truth is that notion was unsuitable.
