‘Inventing Anna’ review: A tale of wasted potential

“Inventing Anna” tells the juicy story of the faux heiress Anna Delvey, who swindled New York’s elite out of tons of of 1000's of dollars  – if solely the present had religion in its personal premise.

Now streaming on Netflix, “Inventing Anna” is predicated on a viral 2018 New York Journal article about Delvey (nee Sorokin), 31 — Russian-born and raised in Germany — who defrauded banks, lodges and acquaintances whereas posing as a trust-fund heiress in New York between 2013-2017. She was convicted for a number of accounts of grand larceny, indicted in 2017 and incarcerated from 2019-2021.

Helmed by Shonda Rhimes and starring Julia Garner (“Ozark”) — a talented actress who appears to have been given unhealthy directing to cover behind a distracting marble-mouthed accent to play Delvey — “Inventing Anna” is a bloated affair, with episodes repeatedly clocking in at over an hour, which feels punishing. (One episode is an egregiously pointless 82 minutes lengthy.)

Every episode begins with an onscreen graphic that reads: “This story is totally true. Aside from the components which are completely made up.”

It’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but it surely’s telling about “Inventing Anna” as an entire: this sequence would have executed higher to stay to the reality, which is already fascinating, as an alternative of weighing it down with fictional elaborations. The top end result seems like wasted potential.

Delvey’s story begs the query of how a younger 20something lady managed to con her means by means of the higher echelons of Manhattan, however the present appears wishy-washy over what course to take — compensating for this by taking a number of zigs and zags to chaotic impact.

The narrative leaps round in time. It begins with “Manhattan Journal” journalist Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky) — who’s loosely based mostly on Jessica Pressler (who wrote the 2018 Delvey story) — as she investigates Delvey and interviews her in jail, making an attempt to piece collectively the puzzle of who this lady is and set up a dynamic not in contrast to Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs.” Apart from her clunky accent, Garner performs Delvey with scenery-chewing relish, a mixture of Lecter and Meryl Streep’s snobby “Satan Wears Prada” character Miranda Priestly.

Outdoors of those jail interview scenes, “Inventing Anna” takes a slapdash journey into Delvey’s previous as Kent seeks out her acquaintances, together with health guru Kacy Duke (Laverne Cox) and socialite Nora Radford (Kate Burton, “Scandal”), who reminisce about and supply differing accounts of Delvey. (One good friend says Delvey dated so much, one other says she didn’t date in any respect.)

The entire affair feels disorganized, and a baffling quantity of display screen time is spent on Vivian’s her profession ambitions, her ill-timed being pregnant and her relationship together with her husband Jack (Anders Holm, “Workaholics”).

There’s nothing improper with a narrative a few journalist and her dwelling life. However on this explicit sequence, no person is tuning in for that. Framing it by means of Vivian is an ill-advised selection – as a journalist, I can attest to the truth that we're not very fascinating!

“Inventing Anna” finally ends up being an odd title for the present. Regardless of prompting from Vivian and Delvey’s former buddies, that query isn't answered in passable style.

In the end, “Inventing Anna” looks like it’s depicting a stranger-than-fiction, but it surely’s a surface-level, half-hearted try to point out us recognizable photos – together with Delvey’s massive, black-framed glasses and cocky demeanor. It’s not sufficient to maintain a sequence.

Like Delvey herself, “Inventing Anna” is all flash with little substance — providing little perception into this enigmatic determine.
