Sabrina Ionescu’s 25 points lift Liberty past Sun in season opener

Sabrina Ionescu had 25 factors and 6 assists and sparked a late run to assist the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Solar 81-79 on Saturday evening at Barclays Middle within the season opener for each groups.

Natasha Howard scored 16 factors, Sami Whitcomb had 15 factors and 5 assists and Jocelyn Willoughby added 13 factors for New York. Willoughby — the No. 10 general choice within the 2020 WNBA draft — didn't play final season after struggling a torn left Achilles tendon in a preseason scrimmage.

Ionescu was fouled as she hit a 12-foot jumper and hit the free throw to present the Liberty a 71-70 lead with 3:51 to play. Jasmine Thomas answered with a three-point play to place Connecticut again in entrance 10 seconds later, however Ionescu adopted with a 3-pointer and a driving layup to make it 76-73 with 2:31 remaining and the Solar trailed the remainder of the best way.

Alyssa Thomas led Connecticut with 25 factors, seven rebounds and 4 steals. Jonquel Jones had 15 factors, Jasmine Thomas scored 13, Brionna Jones added 11 factors and DiJonai Carrington 10. Thomas, the reigning WNBA MVP, was 6 of 17 from area and had six turnovers.
