Thomas’ obvious choice to step down comes after he was the goal of criticism from Democrats and abortion rights activists after he and 4 different justices voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, leaving the difficulty within the arms of state legislatures.

The college stood by Thomas in its response to the petition.

“Freedom of speech isn't freedom from penalties,” a GW alum wrote on the Change.org petition web page. “Removing is a consequence for his espousal of hate, scorn for equal safety, and callous disregard of authorized precedent. He has abused the belief of the nation and the alumni group.”

“He has made his place clear— ladies and members of the LGBTQ+ group are second-class residents, if not much less, in his eyes. GW can't declare to facet with these teams and proceed to place cash in his pockets for any purpose,” an incoming GW freshman added.
