World Bank to give The Gambia $68m grant to revive tourism sector

The Gambia and the World Financial institution have signed a $68m grant to revive the ocean-facing West African nation’s tourism sector.

The deal was introduced by representatives of each events introduced on Tuesday at a signing ceremony in The Gambia’s capital Banjul.

The grant is supposed to advertise diversification and local weather resilience of tourism and assist defend the Atlantic shoreline of The Gambia, a rustic of about 2.1 million inhabitants surrounded by Senegal, from the results of local weather change.

Like many different sectors throughout Africa, tourism has been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic and financial fallouts of the struggle in Ukraine, World Financial institution managing director of operations, Axel Van Trotsenburg, mentioned.

Tourism accounts for roughly 20 % of The Gambia’s gross home product (GDP) and is the most important overseas alternate earner, in line with the federal government.

The pandemic triggered The Gambia’s financial progress to contract by 0.2 % in 2020, in line with the World Financial institution.

The financial system has since began to recuperate, reaching 5.6 % progress in 2021, largely pushed by the return of seaside resort-goers and remittances.
