Crossing the Mediterranean Sea: To Survive or To Die | Close Up

An MSF ship heads out to rescue asylum seekers from Libya who danger their lives by crossing one of many deadliest migrations routes on the planet.

“This sea has grow to be a graveyard, so each second, each minute is essential,” says Fulvia Conte, a group chief on board the Geo Barents, a search-and-rescue ship operated by Medical doctors With out Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) that units out at sea looking for asylum seekers determined to achieve Europe.

The Mediterranean crossing stays the deadliest recognized migration route worldwide. On daily basis, six individuals die attempting to achieve Europe in vessels that aren't seaworthy. “Think about you place all of your life in a single bag, you place your self and your loved ones on a ship hoping to not lose your life at sea,” says Conte when describing the dire state of affairs migrants face earlier than making the treacherous crossing. “Many say that they might quite die at sea than return to Libya.”

For years, Libya has been a transit nation for refugees and financial migrants fleeing poverty, persecution and battle in sub-Saharan Africa and the Center East. Many arrive in Libya hoping for a greater life within the sanctuary of Europe. However the lawlessness of the nation means corruption, abuse, and torture by armed teams are prevalent, with human trafficking from Libya throughout the Mediterranean being a multimillion-dollar enterprise.

As governments round Europe take a harsh stance on immigration, it's individuals like Conte and her group at MSF who tackle the search-and-rescue obligations.

On this episode of Shut Up, we observe Conte and her group on board Geo Barents as they work tirelessly to save lots of lives at sea and navigate the crackdown on immigration by European governments.
