At least 9 pupils drown after ferry capsizes in Cambodia

At the very least 9 pupils died and two stay lacking in southern Cambodia after the ferry wherein they have been crossing a river capsized, officers have mentioned.

4 individuals – two college students and two crew members – have been rescued following the accident on Thursday at about 7pm native time (12:00 GMT) on the Mekong river southeast of the capital, Phnom Penh, police mentioned.

The boat was crowded with 15 passengers and crew, and didn't have life vests, he mentioned.

The scholars, who have been aged between 12 and 14 years previous, lived on an island within the river and used the ferry virtually every single day within the wet season. They have been getting back from an English class when the boat went down.

Authorities mentioned the accident occurred because the boat was about 50 metres (160 ft) from shore and commenced to tackle water within the bow.

Instructed to maneuver to seats within the center or stern of the boat, the ferry turned unbalanced and capsized because the pupils tried to regulate their positions.

Police mentioned the seek for the lacking youngsters is continuous.

The river was about 500-600 metres (1,640 to 1,970 ft) large on the web site of the tragedy and casual boat operators make a residing ferrying individuals between the riverbanks, VOD reported.
