Nazareth frontman Dan McCafferty dead at 76

Dan McCafferty, the lead vocalist and founding member of the Scottish rock band Nazareth, has died aged 76.

“That is the saddest announcement I ever needed to make,” McCafferty’s heartbroken bandmate Pete Agnew wrote on Instagram.

“Maryann [McCafferty’s wife] and the household have misplaced an exquisite loving husband and father, I've misplaced my greatest buddy and the world has misplaced one of many best singers who ever lived. Too upset to say something extra at the moment.”

No explanation for dying was offered.

The rocker, who was a part of Nazareth from its inception in 1968, retired from touring with the band in 2013 because of the results of persistent obstructive pulmonary illness — a lung situation that causes respiratory difficulties.

McCafferty toured with the group for 45 years previous to stepping away from the street.

“I can’t sing on tour like I used to anymore,” he advised Traditional Rock in 2014. “I determine in case you can’t do the job then you definately actually shouldn’t be there. I’m unhappy about it however I simply can’t sing an entire set reside anymore.”

The band’s most well-known songs embody “Damaged Down Angel” and “Hair Of The Canine.”‘

The rocker was recognized for his raspy vocals on 70s rock classics, together with the band’s cowl of the Everly Brothers’ observe “Love Hurts,” which climbed into the highest 10 on the charts.

McCafferty additionally co-wrote lots of the band’s songs all through the Nineteen Seventies. His vocals notably appeared on all of Nazareth’s albums as much as 2014, with the ultimate one being “Rock ‘n’ Roll Phone.”

The rocker is survived by his spouse, Maryann McCafferty, and their two kids.

His dying follows intently that of the band’s founding member, Manny Charlton, who died aged 80 on July 5.
