Police say an Indonesian and Chinese language employee died following a labour protest at a smelter on Sulawesi island.

Two individuals have been killed when employees clashed at a nickel smelting facility operated by a unit of China’s Jiangsu Delong Nickel Business Ltd in Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on the weekend, in line with police.
An Indonesian and a Chinese language employee died after a conflict broke out following a protest staged by a labour group at PT Gunbuster Nickel Business (GNI) smelter, Central Sulawesi police spokesperson Didik Supranoto stated on Monday.
Native media reported the protesters had demanded higher security circumstances and pay.
A number of firm automobiles have been torched, and about 100 rooms at employees’ dormitories have been broken, Didik stated, including that 71 individuals had been detained.
Operations at GNI are presently suspended, Didik added. He didn't say when they may resume.
GNI stated in an announcement the corporate and police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
“The corporate, along with regulation enforcement officers, has instantly launched an in-depth and thorough investigation into the incidents which have induced hurt to all events, each materials and immaterial losses, and even fatalities,” it stated.
GNI launched the smelter in late 2021 with an annual capability of 1.8 million tonnes and a complete funding estimated at $2.7bn.
Violent protests have damaged out sporadically within the mineral-rich area of Sulawesi, which has seen a current funding growth in nickel following elevated demand for its use in electrical automobile batteries.
