Colorado teen dies trying to rescue friends from icy lake

A youngster died after he dove into an icy Colorado lake to attempt to rescue three mates.

Dyllan Whittenburg died on Thanksgiving, simply at some point after his 14th birthday, his household stated.

Whittenburg’s household advised CBS that he rushed to assist his friends who had fallen by way of the ice on Crystal Lake within the Denver space Tuesday, however he grew to become trapped below ice within the frigid waters.

“From our understanding, Dyllan noticed there was a difficulty, and he simply took off operating from what all people stated and dove within the water,” his aunt, Yvonne Wenzel, stated.

“Sadly Dyllan, he went below and no one may discover him quick sufficient to get him.” 

Neighbors used hoses, extension cords and ropes to drag Dyllan’s mates, two women and a boy, to shore, West Metro Hearth Rescue stated.

Dyllan was out farther than the others, the place the lake “rapidly drops off a shelf to 7 to eight ft,” hearth officers stated, and had slipped beneath the ice.

A dive staff finally pulled Dllyan out of the water and took him to an area hospital. He spent his 14th birthday laying in a hospital mattress and died the subsequent day, two days after he had fallen into the lake.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Division remains to be investigating Dyllan’s loss of life.

The Roxborough group celebrated Dyllan’s life Thursday with a candle vigil at Crystal Lake and remembered the teenager, who leaves three youthful siblings behind, as a hero.

“He helped me by way of a lot. Thick and skinny,” stated McKayla Weadick, a buddy. “We have been similar to have been at all times collectively. We've so many reminiscences collectively.”

Dyllan’s mother and father sat alongside the lake’s shore because the group members launched balloons of their son’s reminiscence.

“He touched all people. That child was wonderful,” his father stated.
