Ex-Florida congressman who lobbied on behalf of Venezuela arrested

Former Republican Florida Rep. David Rivera was arrested Monday on federal legal expenses of cash laundering and representing a international authorities with out registering.

Rivera, who represented a Miami-area district in Congress from 2011 to 2013, had signed a $50 million consulting settlement with a state-owned Venezuelan oil firm within the early days of the Trump administration because the socialist nation sought to normalize relations between the U.S. and Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. 

Rivera was arrested at an Atlanta airport and had bailed himself out of jail by Monday afternoon after an look in federal courtroom, in response to the Related Press.

“It was the aim of the conspiracy for the defendants to unlawfully enrich themselves by participating in political actions in the US on behalf of the federal government of Venezuela, and by representing the pursuits of the federal government of Venezuela earlier than officers of the of the US authorities and in an effort to affect United States international coverage,” the 34-page indictment in opposition to Rivera and Nuhfer states.

Rivera’s lobbying agency, Interamerican Consulting, was sued in 2020 by PDV USA, a Delaware-based affiliate of Citgo, a Venezuelan-owned oil firm, over claims that the previous lawmaker didn’t fulfill his obligations of the multimillion greenback contract he signed in 2017 for 3 months of “strategic consulting” work. 

The indictment alleges that Rivera arrange conferences in Washington, New York, and elsewhere with senators, congressmen, and White Home officers to foyer on behalf of the Maduro regime.
