Florida officer who can’t swim rescues drowning infant from retention pond

A Florida officer is being hailed a hero after she jumped right into a retention pond to rescue a drowning toddler, placing her personal life in danger as a result of she didn’t know methods to swim, authorities stated Tuesday.

Officer Me’Atia Sanderson with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Workplace was the primary to reach on the scene on June 9, the sheriff’s workplace stated. She was alerted that the toddler was nonetheless within the water.

The sheriff’s workplace launched bodycam video of the harrowing rescue for the primary time on Tuesday.

“Sanderson, who doesn't know methods to swim herself, and not using a second’s hesitation, entered the pond to retrieve the kid and carried out CPR till she was relieved by different responding officers,” the sheriff’s workplace stated.

Video reveals Sanderson, who joined the sheriff’s workplace in 2019, sprinting into the water and make her approach to the drowning baby. After the kid was pulled from the water, Sanderson continued life-saving efforts.

“Come on, child,” the officer could be heard saying as she performs CPR. “Come on!”

The footage ends when two different officers arrive on the scene and take over CPR efforts.

Officers with the sheriff’s workplace stated Sanderson has been acknowledged for the affect that her “fast and decisive resolution to enter the retention pond” made. 

“Her actions, whereas placing her personal life in danger, undoubtedly saved the kid’s life,” the division stated.
