It’s official: Deion Sanders named Colorado football coach

BOULDER, Colo. — Deion Sanders is taking up as head coach at Colorado, bringing his charisma and larger-than-life persona to a beleaguered Pac-12 program that’s plunged to the underside of school soccer.

The deal was introduced Saturday evening by CU athletic director Rick George.

The Professional Soccer Corridor of Famer has been at Jackson State, a traditionally Black faculty that performs within the NCAA’s second tier of Division I, since 2020. Sanders has guided the Tigers to consecutive Southwestern Athletic Convention titles.

The Tigers beat Southern within the SWAC championship recreation Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, and some hours later Colorado introduced he was coming to Boulder.

Sanders advised his workforce after the sport he had accepted one other job, however meant to teach Jackson State (12-0) within the Celebration Bowl for traditionally Black faculties on Dec. 17 in Atlanta in opposition to Mid-Japanese Athletic Convention champion North Carolina Central.

“In teaching you both get elevated otherwise you get terminated,” Sanders advised his workforce. “There ain’t no graveyard for coaches the place they die on the place. They both going to run you off otherwise you going to stroll off.”

Sanders talked concerning the dearth of Black head coaches on the highest ranges of school soccer and making an attempt to be a catalyst for change.
