The earthquake on Monday morning at 4:17am (01:17 GMT) was centred within the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras Province.

Based on the USA Geological Service (USGS), the earthquake struck at a depth of about 17.9km (11 miles). Turkey’s Catastrophe and Emergency Administration Authority (AFAD) put the magnitude of the quake at 7.4 close to the cities of Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep.

Dozens of aftershocks had been recorded following the quake with officers urging folks to not enter broken buildings as a result of dangers.

In a press release carried by the state-run Anadolu Company, AFAD listed the affected areas as far as Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis.
