Lucy Jones: Can earthquakes ever be predicted?

One of many world’s main seismologists discusses the catastrophe in Turkey and Syria, one month on.

On February 6, at about 4am, the bottom in southern Turkey and northern Syria shook for greater than a minute, whereas most individuals slept.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake – with its epicentre 32km (20 miles) west of the Turkish metropolis of Gaziantep – had struck the area, cracking the bottom open and inflicting in depth harm.

And practically 10 hours later, one other seismic occasion of magnitude 7.5 shook the area once more.

Since then, different tremors and aftershocks have adopted.

However what can we be taught from what occurred in Turkey and Syria a month in the past?

Seismologist Lucy Jones talks to Al Jazeera.
