Movie goers aren’t gaga for ‘House of Gucci’ but ‘Encanto’ enchants

Thanksgiving movie audiences weren’t so charmed by “House of Gucci.”

The Ridley Scott-helmed high-fashion murder saga starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, widely panned by critics, pulled in $3.39 million at the box office on the lightly attended holiday, Deadline.com reported. The flick is expected to earn $23 million before the holiday weekend is out.

Leading the field was more family friendly fare: Disney’s “Encanto.” The Lin-Manuel Miranda scored story of a magical family from Colombia took in a reported $5.8 million on Thursday, though Deadline reported the figure could be revised up to $6 million for the holiday.

All told, the newest Disney hit is forecast to see $46.6 million in box office earnings for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Moviegoing still hasn’t returned to pre-pandemic levels, but theaters are starting to fill back up after the pandemic pummeled the industry, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In between the two high-profile openings was “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the latest installment in the enduring specter-hunting series. It took in $5.3 million on Thursday, after leading last weekend’s box office. The Jason Reitman-directed sequel is looking at $90 million in receipts by the end of its second weekend.

Another Marvel installment, the poorly reviewed “Eternals,” took fourth place among holiday moviegoers, with $1.6 million in receipts. Critics aside, the superhero flick has drawn $150.1 million in its four weeks in theaters.
