Machete-wielding NYC man charged with slicing cop, police say

The machete-wielding man who sliced a cop’s hand in Coney Island on Thursday – and was then shot within the leg by the officer – has been slapped with a number of fees whereas recovering within the hospital, authorities say. 

Richard Paris, 57, was holding the 16-inch weapon and a smaller blade when three cops started battling him on West eighth Avenue within the Brooklyn seaside city round 1 p.m., police mentioned.

“It was this intense extended wrestle that one of many officers was sliced on the hand,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell instructed reporters Thursday. “Luckily the officer, who was a six-year veteran of the division, is recovering within the hospital.” 

The scuffle between Paris and the cops occurred after the suspect jumped out of a parked car with the weapons, police mentioned. He was finally shot by the injured cop — recognized by police sources as Officer John Favale — and brought to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, cops mentioned. 

Paris was charged with assault on a police officer, two counts of tried assault, two counts of menacing a police officer and two counts of legal possession of a weapon, police mentioned.

He remained on the hospital Friday morning, cops mentioned. 

Favale was launched from Coney Island Hospital later Thursday and wheeled out to applause from a big group of fellow officers and dignitaries, together with Mayor Eric Adams, who had simply arrived again from a visit to Los Angeles.

“I've to commend the actions of those courageous officers,” Sewell mentioned.

“I've watched these movies,” the highest cop added of surveillance footage from the scene. “Whereas we don’t but know the motive behind this assault, we definitely know the actions of those officers exemplifies what it means to be a New York Metropolis police officer.”
