NYC officer stabbed in hand, suspect shot in Coney Island, police say

A machete-wielding man sliced an NYPD officer within the hand Thursday throughout a battle with cops in Coney Island that ended with the suspect being shot within the leg, police officers mentioned.

The 57-year-old man was holding the 16-inch weapon and a smaller blade when three cops started fighting him on West eighth Road within the Brooklyn seaside city round 1 p.m., police mentioned.

“It was this intense extended battle that one of many officers was sliced on the hand,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell mentioned throughout a short press convention on the 60 Precinct station home. “Fortuitously the officer, who was a six-year veteran of the division, is recovering within the hospital.”

The suspect, who jumped out of a car with the weapons after parking on the street, was shot within the leg and eliminated to a hospital with expenses pending, cops mentioned. The injured cop was taken to Coney Island Hospital.

Sources mentioned the injured officer — who was recognized as Officer John Favale, one of many three brothers on the NYPD — shot the blade-welding man.

The suspect had no prior run ins with cops, sources added.

The officer was wheeled out of Coney Island Hospital later within the day to applause from a big group of fellow officers and dignitaries, together with Mayor Eric Adams, who had simply arrived again from a visit to Los Angeles.

The suspect stays hospitalized.

Police Benevolent Affiliation President Patrick Lynch mentioned the division may use the incident as a part of its coaching.
