Chinese-Canadian billionaire Xiao sentenced to 13 years in prison

Shanghai court docket says tycoon Xiao Jianhua carried out corrupt practices together with bribery and the unlawful use of funds.

A Shanghai court docket has sentenced Chinese language-Canadian billionaire Xiao Jianhua to 13 years in jail and fined his Tomorrow Holdings Co conglomerate a file 55.03 billion Chinese language yuan ($8.1bn).

Xiao and his Tomorrow Holdings have been charged with illegally absorbing public deposits, betraying the usage of entrusted property, and the unlawful use of funds and bribery, the Shanghai First Intermediate Court docket stated on Friday.

Xiao was fined 6.5 million yuan ($954,655) for the crimes, the court docket stated.

The court docket stated that Xiao and Tomorrow had “severely violated monetary administration order” and “damage state monetary safety”.

From 2001 to 2021, Xiao and Tomorrow Holdings gave shares, actual property, money and different belongings to authorities officers totalling greater than 680 million yuan ($99.87m), to evade monetary supervision and search illegitimate pursuits, the court docket stated.

China-born Xiao, recognized to have hyperlinks to China’s Communist Celebration elite, has not been seen in public since 2017 after he was investigated amid a state-led conglomerate crackdown.

In July 2020, 9 of the group’s associated establishments have been seized by Chinese language regulators as a part of a crackdown on dangers posed by monetary conglomerates.
