Brittney Griner ‘doing as well as can be expected’ in Russian prison: White House

WNBA star Brittney Griner is doing “in addition to may be anticipated beneath the circumstances” after US officers in Moscow visited the 32-year-old not too long ago sentenced to 9 years in a Russian penal colony, White Home Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated Thursday.

An eight-time All-Star for the Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Griner misplaced her Oct. 25 attraction of the sentence for possessing and smuggling vape cartridges containing lower than a gram of hashish oil into Russia. She and her attorneys had requested for an acquittal or lowered sentence.

Griner’s guests “noticed firsthand her tenacity and perseverance regardless of her current circumstances,” State Division spokesman Ned Value stated on Twitter on Thursday.

“We proceed to press for the rapid launch of Brittney Griner and [fellow incarcerated American] Paul Whelan and truthful remedy for each detained American,” he added.

The US has been lobbying the Kremlin for months to launch Griner and Whelan, who has been serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of espionage, a cost he denies.

Jean-Pierre stated negotiations for the pair’s launch are “a prime precedence” for the White Home.

“The US authorities made a big provide to the Russians to resolve the present unacceptable and wrongful detentions of Americans Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan,” Jean-Pierre stated. “Within the subsequent weeks, regardless of an absence of good-faith negotiation by the Russians, the US authorities has continued to observe up on that provide and suggest various potential methods ahead with Russia via all accessible channels.”

The White Home has not detailed what it has provided Moscow in trade for Griner and Whelan’s launch, although reviews have indicated that Washington had floated releasing infamous Russian arms vendor Viktor Bout in trade for the People.

Bout is serving a 25-year sentence within the US and has been dubbed “The Service provider of Demise.”
